As Uganda’s presidential elections approach, the Kinalegu Foundation, a human rights organization based in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is sounding the alarm about serious human rights violations.
according to the Foundation, the current political climate is marked by increasing repression against opposition supporters, notably those of candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine. President Yoweri Museveni, in power for several decades and a candidate for his own succession, is accused of leading an aggressive propaganda campaign and resorting to acts of torture to weaken the popularity of his main rival.
“What is happening now in Uganda is unacceptable. Why torture a voter to change their choice, when the vote is supposed to be secret? », says Florentin Tigine, president of the Kinalegu Foundation.
“We have received numerous complaints from Ugandan citizens. we will document these violations so that the perpetrators are brought to justice. »
The Foundation also calls on the international community to react. Mrtigine urges the African Union, international organizations and human rights structures to send investigators to the field to shed light on ongoing abuses.
“We call on those committing these acts of violence to stop immediately. democracy cannot flourish in a climate of fear and repression,” he concludes.
